Summary on Grant Application Form
The research involves methodological, algorithmic development and trials in vibration control in the area of frequency selective adaptive control. The methodological research builds on results achieved in the area of parameter bounding techniques (GR/J10846) and on recent developments in active vibration control (Elliott et al) and frequency selective adaptive control (Wittenmark et al). The new solutions will cope with non-linear perturbations present in most applications and new control schemes are to be developed to guarantee performance for time varying systems. Two groups of results will be developed: (I) basic stability results in the face of fast changing dynamics and (ii) advanced performance robustness results under non-linear dynamics. The algorithms will be implemented and applied to reduce the noise generated by a device enclosure, which is relevant to the industrial partner. The methodology developed will be useful far beyond the area of active vibration and sound control and will address also some fundamental problems of control theory in the worst-case design area. Practical results will help to reduce noise pollution by delivery vehicles and transport.
