The aim of this project is to investigate chemical reaction between ions and molecules, which occur in plasmas. Plasmas are gases with high concentrations of charged particles, electrons and ions, which are used in the manufacture of computer chips. Processes using plasmas are being developed to remove pollutants from exhaust gases. Plasmas also occur naturally, the most spectacular example being lightening. There is a need to understand the chemical processes in plasmas, which currently have to be developed by trial and error, experience and intuition. Computer models of plasmas are being developed for this purpose; it is hoped that with these models it will be possible to aid the development of new plasma processing methods and improve existing processes. Plasma models require basic data on the chemical reactions in plasmas; supplying this data is the motivation for this project. Funding is sought for an instrument with a new design to study reactions which arise following gentle, low energy, collisions between the ion and molecule. Experimentally, these reactions are hard to study, which is why this new design, which incorporates a strong magnetic field, is proposed.
