Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is concerned with the experimental investigation and mathematical modelling of the anode region of a widely used technological plasma, a free burning high pressure arc. The anode region plays a decisive role in determining the quality of the processing product, yet it is poorly understood. The theoretical description will be based on a two fluid model together with Poisons equation to describe the sheath, with the local plasma parameters set as asymptotic boundary conditions and will be extended to describe the anode region, with consideration of the energy flux at the boundary surface. The experimental study will involve the use of novel, partially insulated Langmuir probes to examine the influence of fluid flow on charge capture and the extent of local plasma disturbances caused by the invasive probe. Electrical and calorimetric examination of the plasma-anode interface will also be carried out and results will provide data for comparison with and validation of the theoretical models. The combined modelling and experimental approach will yield a robust high pressure plasma diagnostic tool for applied technological plasmas, suitable for condition monitoring in situations where stability or long term structural changes may adversely affect performance, efficiency or safety.
