Summary on Grant Application Form |
The work will model processes leading to the volatilisation and redeposition of some trace elements in a cement kiln which result in buildup of these elements within certain regions of the kiln. The computational investigation will be initiated by prediction of local thermodynamic equilibria involving the partitioning of the trace elements between the gas phase, solid solutions and the various melts that can be formed, using FACT (Ecole Polytechnique, Montreal) and MTDATA (UK NPL) thermodynamic packages. Non-equilibrium conditions will be superimposed using MAEROS and Surface CHEMKIN. The resulting model for local processes will be interfaced with ASPEN or MODELMAKER, to obtain a representation of the whole kiln for the dry process, and the hotter region of the kiln for the semi-wet and wet processes.Work will be guided by experimental informaton provided by Blue Circle Industries Plc obtained from full-sized kilns; and from small scale deposition studies of trace deposition on cement kiln dust (CKD) in a drop tube furnace; low pressure revolatilisation studies of CKD by mass specrometric on-line monitoring plus cold-trapped volatiles analysis; and Knudsen-cell mass spectrometry investigations of commercial clinker and simulated clinker - all carried out in this Department.
