Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall objective of this work is to develop a new tool for rapid characterisation of fuel injectors in GDI engines. This objective will be realised through the LSD technique (for liquid volume fraction and average liquid droplet size (Sauter Mean Diameter or SMD) and a combination of LSD and PIV where droplet trajectories are required. The utility of this approach will be tested through application of the methods to an optical GDI engine for 3 differing injection strategies. In order to provide a comprehensive description of the fuel injection process, the mixture formation process will be quantitatively mapped using a previously proven measurement technique, namely LIF.EngProg\
