Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposed Masters Training Program in Lightweight Materials for Tomorrow's Technology (LMTT) is to train students in the essential skills needed to design and make lightweight materials. Students will take options from each of the following skill areas: engineering macro and microstructures through processing and synthesis; key skills in characterising materials; engineering for performance and designing for life/environment. Through choices within each strand students will be able to focus on the skills needed to develop particular classes of materials (e,g. polymers or metals), or acquire proficiency across the materials classes for product oriented materials selection and design. A further target is to prepare the Package for distance learning through the use of web-based resources. This will develop novel forms of delivery, e.g. the Internet Microscope for use as a tutorial in understanding microstructure development.
