Summary on Grant Application Form
The project involves studying the classical statics and dynamics (and quantum corrections) of topological solitons in various nonlinear field theories in three spatial dimensions. The principal interest is in Skyrme-type sigma models, for target spaces SU (N) and S^2; and in their relation to Yang-Mills-Higgs monopoles. Two different techniques will be used to deal with the relevant partial differential equations: full numerical simulation and collective-coordinate descriptions. One of the aims of this project is to ascertain how well the results of these two procedures agree. The emphasis throughout is on the behaviour (dynamics) of the solitions, rather than on the computational aspects as such. Our intention is to complement work being done by other researchers in this large subject.
