Summary on Grant Application Form |
We wish to take our threshold photoelectron spectrometers to the Advanced Light Source at Berkeley, California to study threshold photoionisation of the hydrogen halides. We would take advantage of the very high resolution available at that source which indeed provides the best resolution anywhere in the world for the proposed studies. We propose to study the formation of both singly charged ions & doubly charged ions. In the case of single ionisation we would investigate photoionisation in HF and HC1 at he level of individually resolved rotational states. This would allow us to determine the processes that control the change in rotational quantum number at threshold. In the case of the double ionisation we would investigate the archetypal molecular ion HF++ which is the bridge between the fundamental molecule H2 and the heavier halogen halides which are prototype systems for theoretical studies of diatomic molecules. We would complete this comparison with a study of HBr++.
