This proposal applies liquid crystals, photocrosslinking and photoalignment to organic electroluminescent displays (OLEDs) to develop multilayer devices with better carrier transporting properties as well as novel flexible photopatternable polarised displays. Smectic mesogens show high carrier mobility but are not practical in OLEDs to date because of their high melting points. We will prepare reactive smectic mesogens, align them in their smectic phase and photocrosslink them to form a stable network. We will also develop crosslinkable chromophores of low molecular weight so that electroluminescent gels and elastomers can be made for the first time. These can be used for flexible and deformable displays. Photoalignment layers, oriented by irradiation with polarised UV light, will be used to align the smectic materials to give high mobility and also liquid crystalline gels and elastomers for polarised electroluminescence. New photoalignment materials with optimised transport and anchoring properties will be developed. A major advantage will be the ease of patterning by changing the polarisation direct of the UV light. Hence high resolution 2-D EL images viewable only through a polariser could be generated and used in smart card technology. only this combination of non-contact alignment layers and EL LCs are capable of generating such images.
