Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to develop and evaluate algorithms for tomographic reconstruction of 3-d images of the atmosphere. The program will make use of the L-band transmission from the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites to make measurements of refractivity. Images of the lower regions of the Earth's atmosphere will reveal the spatial variations of tropospheric refractivity and water vapour concentration. Simultaneously, images of ionospheric variations in the electron concentration will be reconstructed for the ionised region of the atmosphere. The novelty of this work is that fully three-dimensional images of the atmosphere will be reconstructed and data from both ground-based and satellite-based receivers will be used. The use of radio-occultation data is particularly relevant at the present time because of the planned launched over the next three years of many new low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites that will carry dual frequency GPS receivers. Application areas for this work include radio-propagation research, satellite navigation and numerical weather prediction.
