Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal seeks to develop the III-V nitrides for application in flat-panel powder based electroluminescent (EL) devices. It is a novel use for a well established material which, based on GaN, have proved themselves to be a very robust materials for blue-green emitting LED and laser devices with laser device lifetimes of several thousand hours having been revealed. Very bright blue and green nitride-based LED's are now available commercially. This high performance suggests that III-V nitrides should be seriously considered for powder EL panels given that the commonly used sulphides such as ZnS suffer from known limited lifetimes when used for powder EL displays. Recent research has shown that Rare-Earth doped GaN can now offer red, green and blue emission without the need for alloying. The optical output power/spectra and lifetimes of simple AC-driven devices will be evaluated as part of the research. This applied research will benefit UK manufacturers involved in EL lamps and displays, particularly PACEL in Poole who will be evaluating material produced from this project.
