Summary on Grant Application Form
The areas of Communications and Multimedia Signal Processing are key growth areas internationally and are of major strategic importance to the UK economy. There is however a serious skills shortage which is likely to grow with its increasing strategic importance. This application builds on our existing MSc and enhances it to provide increased breadth through the addition of a new option stream in optical data communication systems, entrepreneurship training through the new Bristol Enterprise Centre and increased industrial involvement through collaborative industry-based research projects. The course will thereby provide students with skills ranging across communications and signal processing, with sufficient business insight to be able to make an excellent start in an industrial career. Such skills, we believe, are also highly beneficial to those who wish to progress to research degrees, and hence believe that it is important that EPSRC support be provided to encourage such training.
