Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will use cross-disciplinary science, involving both field experiments and predictive modelling at different scales of investigation, to meet pressures on land and water resources in the UK linked to sludge recycling to land. Our research will contribute to knowledge on waste attenuation in the environment and on measures to tackle non-point source pollution and control eutrophication by devising Best Environmental Practice Options. The research programme will:1. Undertake field experiments and flowpath modelling to quantify contaminant export in surface and subsurface hydrological pathways from sludge-amended land.2. Predict the spatial susceptibility of different areas of a catchment to contaminant loss, and identify areas of spare capacity which have a low environmental risk of sludge-derived contaminant export.3. Develop the NERM (Nutrient Export Risk Matrix) as an environmentally-sensitive decision support framework to help end-users make strategic decisions regarding recycling sludge to land that will minimise non-point source contaminant pollution.EngProg\
