The flow of gravity currents down slopes is to be studied experimentally and theoretically. We will perform experiments by releasing dense fluid into a less dense ambient. The intrusion will be made dense by altering its composition (eg by changing its salinity) or by suspending relatively heavy particles within it. We will measure the rate of propagation, the process of mixing between the two fluids and for particle-laden flows, the distribution of the resulting deposit. We will seek mathematical models which capture the fundamental dynamics of the flows and predict its evolution. When the concentration of suspended particles is sufficiently high, extra physical effects may affect the motion. The viscosity of the intruding fluid is significantly increased and it may exhibit a yield stress. In this case the flow may be abruptly arrested. We will develop further mathematical models which incorporate these rheological changes.
