Summary on Grant Application Form |
As water quality standards and water discharge standards continue to tighten, current technologies are expected to be ineffective in meeting future demands. Innovative and efficient processes are thus called for.The main objective of the present project is to establish the feasibility of an entirely novel surfactant-based technique for the removal of water soluble pollutants, based on a colloidal flocculation (coagulation) process known as Associative Micellar Flocculation. In the process, pollutants associate with ionic surfactant (detergent) micelles, for example, by binding to the surface or by solubilisation within the core. The micelles are then made to flocculate through the addition of strong multivalent electrolyte, which neutralises the micellar surface charge. The flocculate can then be separated by normal filtration.Laboratory-scale jar studies will be carried out on raw and waste water samples, containing the following target pollutants: organic synthesis intermediates; pesticides and herbicides; heavy metal ions; organometallic dyes; and other organics. The tests will determine the classes of pollutant which are strongest candidates for the technique, and the extent of reduction in pollutant concentration. Promising alternative systems (surfactant and flocculant) will also be determined.EngProg\
