Summary on Grant Application Form
Plasma treated polyester is rendered hydrophilic which considerably enhances the treated material's ability to attract synovial cells above that of untreated polyester. Treated and untreated yarns will be placed in culture and the number of cells adhering to both yarn types will be compared. Cell proliferation, their extent of differentiation and collagen biosynthesis will also be compared, when the yarns (and hence cells) are subjected to cyclic strains, while in culture. Results will reveal the potential of the treated material for use as a ligament scaffold for direct implantation, thus obviating the need for seeding and culture prior to implanting.
