Summary on Grant Application Form |
A novel interpretation of experimental data for the rate of nucleation of droplets from supersaturated vapours gives powerful new insights into the properties of small, loosely bound molecular clusters. We wish to explore these insights using computer simulations (employing Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics), focussing on a comparison of experimental and predicted binding energies for liquid molecular clusters of a selection of alkanes, alcohols and aromatics. The understanding of molecular clustering gained will relate to diverse areas, including particle nucleation behaviour for environmental and industrial applications, and the controlled formation of quantum dots.
