Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is concerned with the theory of three dimensional free surface flows. Here a free surface refers to an interface between two fluids. Such a surface is not known a priori and has to be found as part of the solution. This leads to a highly nonlinear mathematical problem, for which we propose to develop new numerical and analytical approaches. We plan to use these approaches to further our understanding of three dimensional flows by calculating strongly nonlinear flows. The research is motivated by the fact that existing accurate solutions are often restricted to two dimensional flows whereas applications (for example in ship hydrodynamics and engineering) involve three dimensional flows. The intended RA is Emilean Parau. Parau is particularly well suited for the position since he has extensive experience in the study of nonlinear interfacial flows. He has expressed a strong commitment to accepting the RA should it be awarded. Nevertheless other potential candidates are known to the PI.
