Summary on Grant Application Form |
A great deal of research in cryptography has focused on anonymity. This protects the democratic rights of the individual and is a highly desirable feature in many applications. However it can also be abused by criminals. It is therefore important to design cryptographic schemes for which, in special circumstances, the identities of the parties involved can be traced. The main objective of this project is to determine whether this is possible in some of the more important applications of society orientated cryptography. Central to this research will be the analysis of the architectures of threshold schemes (such as group signature schemes), broadcast encryption schemes (such as PayTV), key encryption escrow schemes, and digital watermarking schemes (for copyright protection and authentication). In the cases where traceability is possible, appropriate protocols will be proposed. Ideally these should not rely on tamper resistant hardware devices. The practicality of such protocols is of great concern. Therefore bounds on the lengths of the secret keys and other parameters of these schemes will also be analysed.
