Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the project is to deliver step changes in catalyst manufacture that will, in combination with a quantitative characterisation of trickle bed reactor hydrodynamics obtained from magnetic resonance imaging and velocimetry techniques and application of microkinetic analysis for catalyst selection and design, enable development of a completely new fixed bed reactor technology for fine chemicals manufacture the development of such processes has been impossible to date because of the inability of catalyst manufacturers to produce large volumes of reproducible catalyst while retaining flexibility in manufacture to move production between different products quickly and with a high degree of control over the product catalyst.our ability to incorporate this new quantitative characterisation of reactor hydrodynamics for optimising process operation will first be assessed with reference to the optimisation of a hydrodesulphurisation trickle bed process. Further optimisation will be considered following a microkinetic assessment of a range of commercially available catalysts and materials produced within the project. The same approach will be used to assess the feasibility of a new hydrodearomatisation manufacturing technology.
