Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to search for a microscopic origin of the holographic principle in the framework of quantized 2+1 gravity with negative cosmological constant. The reason for this choice is that 2+1 gravity is solvable quantum mechanically except for surface effects which are present when the cosmological constant is negative. These surface effects are responsible for the existence of BTZ black holes or arbitrary mass M and angular momentum J, and should account for their entropy. We shall look for holography in this simple case where quantum gravity appears within reach, but where the direct relevance of M theory appears questionable.
