This proposal seeks to explore a new avenue of synthesising molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). MIPs are synthetic polymeric receptors with potential applications as synthtic enzymes or antibodies, recognition layers in sensors or as selective separation media. Essentially all MIPs are prepared via free radical polymerisation, a kinetically controlled process which leads to MIPs with relatively poorly defined (polyclonal) receptor sites. This is completely the opposite in nature where receptors, such as enzymes are monoclonal. Here we propose to synthesise MIPs via a thermodynamically controlled synthetic route which is expected to result in less polyclonal thus significantly improved MIPs.
