Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will investigate basic interaction mechanisms of the 157 nm (VUV)F laser with inorganic glasses. Initial work will characterise various glasses in terms of VUV absorption and ablation thresholds/rates to delinearte processing regimes for material modification and ablation. Work will then explore;1. The magnitude and origin of VUV photosensitivity (refractive index change) in glasses.2. Micromachining of simple structures with controlled surface morphology.3. Analysis of VUV laser ablation plumes by mass spectrometry, ion probes and characterisation of deposited glass films. The research is aimed at assessing the potential of VUV laser processing for glass micro-device fabrication.
