Summary on Grant Application Form |
Resultants are an increasingly important tool in computational algebra particularly for polynomial systems solving. The main purpose of the proposed collaboration between Agnes Szanto and Elizabeth Mansfield is the adaptation of recent advances concerning their computation and application for algebraic systems, to differential systems. The immediate objective will be to develop a notion of a differential resultant that has the same properties as the classical resultant algebraic resultant. We will then apply our ideas to improving the characteristic set algorithm for differential systems, which will be implemented. Applications are classifications and equivalence problems. Numerical methods to which symbolic ideas can be applied are those of geometric integration schemes and these will be examined.
