Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the project is to determine the feasibility of using Diamond-Like Carbon coating on cold forming tools with the intention of extending tool life. On the route to finding the answer to this question, a full characterisation of the substrate and the coating will be completed. The initial basic experimental work will be completed at the University. To ensure that all industrial factors are taken into account a proportion of the work will be completed at CSW Coldform Ltd. In addition to the industrial trials the industrial based investigations will include some of the work examining the effect on coating behaviour of industrial lubricants. On completion of the work a set of guidelines relating to substrate preparation and coating deposition will be produced. This will ensure that the tool performance is reproducible. During the project full thermo-mechanical finite element models of the forming process will be developed. The models will be more sophisticated compared with the models presently used by CSW Coldform Ltd and provide the researchers will a good understanding of the thermal behaviour at the tool interface and consequently the Diamond-Like Carbon coating.
