Summary on Grant Application Form |
The advantages of using home-grown hardwoods as prestigious and durable materials in high quality buildings has become increasingly clear to architects. However, the construction of the Scottish Parliament Building has highlighted the considerable barriers that exist to both the designer and smaller scale manufacturer in supplying the needs of large developments. This project will define best practice in specifying and procuring certified UK hardwood products by: actively engaging architects, designers and engineers in a critical examination of their specification and procurement procedures for sustainable timber products such as flooring, windows, cladding etc; discussing & analysing procurement procedures, supplier networks and product requirements with construction companies and determining the nature of the assurances they require to extend their supplier base; working with selected sawmillers to develop a marketing portfolio describing product availability, sustainability, price, lead times etc.; holding workshops for companies from throughout the supply chain, to identify the barriers to improvement and to review the findings prior to publication & Dissemination; presenting the results to selected Royal Incorporation of Architects Scotland (RIAS) events/conferences; publishing findings.
