Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our preliminary work has demonstrated that a tethered chelating group, such as ethylenediamine, can induce unusual coordination chemistry at nucleobases. For example complexes have been prepared which feature coordination at N3 of C8 of the purine moieties, adenine and guanine. In addition to mononuclear species large macrocyclic and polymeric structures have been characterised. Some of the resulting complexes are also capable of taking part in base-pair hydrogen bonding. Hence, the resulting molecules are useful as building blocks for supramolecular chemistry through a combination of coordinate and hydrogen bond formation. It is proposed to explore the reactivity of thioether and diamine tethered derivatives of purine and pyrimidine nucleobases towards heavier transition metals such as Ru, Rh, Pt and Pd. It is proposed to characterise the resulting complexes using X-ray crystallography, nmr and MS. Target compounds of particular interest are macromolecular complexes and those which contain two or more nucleobases and are therefore capable of self-assembly interactions.
