Summary on Grant Application Form |
H (Rydberg) atom photofragment translational spectroscopy (PTS) is a high resolution variant of the traditional PTS experiment, which enables study of the primary photochemistry of molecular hydrides in unprecedented detail. In many cases, the measured H atom time-of-flight (TOF) spectrum is sufficiently resolved to reveal structure associated with individual quantum states in the partner photofragment. This proposal seeks support to enable the first concerted application of the Rydberg tagging method to studies of the photochemistry of free radicals - particularly small hydrocarbon radicals and the Rydberg radical NH4 (ND4). Intense, internally cold, radical beams will be produced using the supersonic jet flash pyrolysis method pioneered in the group of Chen (Zurich), and optimised by measuring photoionisation yields within the source region of a purpose designed and built time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Measurements of the 'action' spectra for forming H(D) atom products, as a function of excitation wavelength, will provide much new insight into the hitherto poorly defined electronic absorption spectroscopy of these radicals, while details of the photochemistry (and thermochemistry) associated with these H(DF) atom loss processes will be deduced from measurement (and analysis) of the kinetic energy distributions of these H(D) photoproducts following radical photolysis at various user selected wavelengths.
