In this proposal we aim to develop methods of fabricating extremely large array-size microelectrode arrays on both rigid and flexible substrates. Hence we wish to contribute to the development of a massively parallel readout system for studies in neurobiology as part of a wider partnership. We will fabricate ~500 electrode arrays on ITO/glass using methods of electron-beam lithography and plasma processing. We will characterise these both electrically and on biological specimens to check for signal to noise and cross-talk. We will develop methods for fabricating on flexible substrates and make smaller arrays with up to 61 electrodes. These will have a direct impact on cell recording experiments in Glasgow. We will also examine the feasibility of making ~200 electrode arrays, examining a new type of electrode geometry. The initial neurobiology experiments with the ~500 electrode arrays will be centred at the Salk Institute, San Diego, USA.
