Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research proposed in this application intends to develop sensor systems based on natural and synthetic iron chelators for the determination of total iron concentrations in the marine environment. To this end the siderophore, parabactin, will be grown, extracted and purified from the bacterium P denitrificans. The parabactin will be encapsulated in solica sol-gel matrices for the fluorescence quenching measurement of Fe)III).The second part of this research programme will focus on the development of holographic sensors for the detection of iron using synthetic and subsequently natural iron chelators. Both sensor systems will be developed in order to provide measurements of total iron concentrations in oceanic waters - a parameter which has particular relevance to climatic change.EngProg\
