The aim of this proposal is to continue the commissioning of the General Materials Diffractometer (GEM) at ISIS, beyond the end of the currently funded initial phase in February 2000. The original grant awarded to the project has allowed for the construction and initial commissioning of the instrument. However, further developments, including the installation of an enhanced detector array using existing funding, will require additional commissioning beyond what was previously envisaged. Some aspects of the instrument such as the oscillating radial collimator, the sample changers, and certain pieces of specialised sample environment equipment will also not be operational until after the original commissioning period. As well as this the initial call for commissioning proposals from the CRG was not only heavily oversubscribed but also contained some highly significant science which will only become possible with the instrument in its phase II configuration. It is vital that the initial scientific potential of the instrument is realised in a controlled manner within the remit of the original project.As with the project as a whole this new commissioning time is requested on behalf of a partnership between the user community as embodied in the original GEM CRG and the ISIS facility.
