|
The Surface Science Research Centre at the University of Liverpool has a powerful equipment base and expertise in an armoury of surface science techniques. We have already developed the capability to prepare clean well-ordered quasicrystal surfaces reproducibly. We propose to apply our wide-ranging expertise in a series of key experiments to tackle some of the most important unsolved problems in the field of quasicrystal surfaces. These include the open questions of surface structure, 2D quasicrystalline overlayers, the relationship between surface structure and friction, the behaviour of electrons in such an aperiodic environment and the reactivity of these surfaces to molecules and atomic species. The outcomes of these experiments will form a platfrom for future technological applications and for further advances in the field.
