Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to produce the first in a series of short videos and booklet packages to inspire families to discus current topics in the physical and engineering sciences in the home and to try out relevant experiment together. The packages are intended to reinforce the experiences of visitors to Sciences Centres, to maintain the enthusiasm generated by the visit and to promote the appreciation of the relevance of scientific reseacd to their everyday lives. The videos will ask questions to lead the viewers to answers through a research based procedure so that people will begin to use the scientific method, even though they may not recognise i as such. The booklets will explore the subject in greater detail, provide suggestions for experiments to try a home, and describe relevant current research in and its potential impact on peoples everyday lives. The first package will centre on developments in structural materials science. We will illustrate severa areas of materials development by presenting problems where specific properties are needed and then describing the research that has gone on to manufacture materials with the required properties.
