Summary on Grant Application Form |
The commercial application of mid-infrared diode lasers for high sensitivity gas analysis is currently limited by their poor quantum efficiency. In III-V compounds Auger recombination dominated at room temperature and so cryogenic of thermo-electric cooling becomes necessary. Iv-VI compounds by comparison have a mirror band structure and potentially lower Auger rates which promise higher laser operating temperatures. But these materials suffer from interface & Shockley-Read recombination due to poor substrate quality.Within the present proposal we now wish to build on our existing expertise and pursue complementary research towards a novel hybrid GaSb PbSe laser which combines the superior crystalline perfection of III-V substrates and well developed materials technology, with the potentially higher intrinsic quantum efficiency of the IV-VI compounds.Epitaxial growth and laser fabrication will be done at Lancaster. A prototype hybrid laser operating at room temperature near 4um will be demonstrated. Auger rates will be measured and compared with data on existing III-V structures. Modelling and gain measurements will be carried out in Cardiff to elucidate the details of the proposed structures. Pump-probe measurements at FELIX (via Heriot-Watt) will be carried out to determine Auger rates. We note that there is currently no UK research into Pb-salt IV-VI lasers.
