Summary on Grant Application Form |
A set of novel experimental tools will be developed or scoped to measure the properties and evolution over time of lubricant films and of solid surfaces in high pressure, lubricated contacts. Properties to be studied within rubbing contact are fluid and surface temperature, shear stress, pressure and the flow profile of the lubricant film. The evolution of surface topography, reaction film, lubricant degradation due to shear and subsurface damage accumulation will be monitored out-of-contact but in-situ, i.e. within operating tribometers. The overall objective of the programme is to develop the tools necessary for the design and validation of models for predicting the useful operating life of lubricated machine components. Secondary aims are to provide experimental information to improve our understanding of elastohydrodynamic rheology and to support modelling work on thin film, mixed lubricated contact.
