Our previous EPSRC funding (GR/L26780) enabled us to develop polymer gel dosimeters, sequences for dose read-out, new spectroscopic approaches to study the effect of dosimeter composition and to investigate gel-ageing, stability and oxygen contamination. During the lifetime of this project we have developed techniques for IMRT to the point where they are being implemented clinically. Specifically, we are implementing a new technique to improve the homogeneity of dose to the breast using IMRT delivered by compensators and by the dynamic multileaf collimator technique. We are doing the same for improving the treatment of head and neck cancer. We propose to further develop PGD to further the understanding of gel respo0nse using MR imaging and spectroscopy, to develop less toxic gels and to further study their physical properties. We shall use existing techniques and later the newly developed ones to provide the necessary quality assurance for the development of conformal R/T in the clinic. We shall predict the dose distributions comparing them with measured distributions. We shall complete the chain of R/T processes that begin with identifying tumour volume and take us through planning, delivery to final verification. At present in the UK we are uniquely set up to do this.
