Summary on Grant Application Form
We have managed to obtain bainite by transformation at temperatures as low as 150 degrees C. Preliminary results show that the resulting microstructure has a strength in excess of 2500 MPa with a far greater ductility than martensite in the same steel. Such properties have never been achieved with bainite. Furthermore, the overall kinetics of the transformation temperature are such that the strength can be achieved in large components using practicable heat treatments. The microstructure and alloy range is the subject of a patent application with DERA.The discovery of the very strong bainite occurred during the course of unrelated work. We now need to characterise and understand the development of the very fine bainitic microstructure associated with the incredibly low transformation temperature, and to create a model which leads to the design of a novel generation of optimised ultrastrong and tough bainitic steels.
