The overall aim of the research is to industrially evaluate, autosport and textile machinery components manufactured from titanium and iron based intermetallics which have been surface engineered by innovative techniques (developed in the project) to improve their tribological and load bearing properties. The innovative surface technologies are totally environmentally friendly and cost effective in that nitrogen gas and air are the proposed active species for surface hardening and intermetallics. Established industrial facilities including vacuum annealing furnaces and hot isostatic processing units will be employed throughout the research. A computer model that predicts the thickness of the diffusion layers and their load bearing capacity will be developed. Characterisation studies will be used to establish the structure-property-processing relations of surface engineered components and extensive wear studies will be conducted. Impact characterisation on a nano-scale will be a novel aspect of the work.
