This project aims to address the on-line non-linear optimising control of multi product batch/fed-batch agile manufacturing processes with particular emphasis on the control of process chemistry. The agile batch optimising control problem requires three challenges to be addressed. First, the on-line real time dynamic optimisation of the plant subject to a number of process and chemical constraints and rapidly changing recipes/products. Secondly, the close control and regulation of the process temperature, feed and mixing profiles to allow optimal control trajectories to be accurately followed; and thirdly the inclusion of process chemistry through full wavelength spectroscopic measurements into the optimisation control algorithm and its constraints. These challenges will be tackled by integrating recurrent neuro-fuzzy networks models, based upon both process knowledge and process date, to provide long range predictions alongside the on-line estimation of process disturbances and changing reaction conditions. Powerful theoretical results on linear control system robustness and stability such as structured singular value analysis will be brought to bear upon the robustness and stability of the overall non-linear model predictive controller. Data density based confidence bounds will be incorporated into batch optimising control strategies.
