Summary on Grant Application Form |
A major problem encontoured in the stress induced forming of dry agglomerated ceramics is the creation of non-uniform internal structures, namely nonhomogeneous density distributions, within the unfired green compact, due to the actions of powder-die wall and interparticle interaction (friction) effects. Such structural inhomegeneity may then cause defects, during densification (sintering), which reduces product quality and consistency. Hence, the determination of the influence of the processing history on the structural evolution of ceramic agglomerates, at both the microscopic and macroscopic levels, is central for the resolution of the main problems occuring during the formation of green bodies and their sintered products. The proposed work will provide a basic understanding to examine these facets of the process. The numerical work described in this proposal will provide a working numerical rheometric tool for the structural evolution, during the consolidation process, which can be used to more readily examine various process parameters and to obtain more detailed and reproducible sets of numerical data than can be obtained by experiment, such as continuous density and shape evolutions from the initial particulate form to the green body stage.
