Summary on Grant Application Form |
Dynamics and mechanism of ultrafast photochemical processes triggered by laser excitation of transition metal complexes will be investigated. Namely, the research will focus on chemical and physical consequences of metal to ligand charge transfer excitation. Deep understanding of following photoinduced processes will be obtained: (i) electron transfer between ligands bound to the same metal atom, (ii) intra-ligand isomerisation caused by excitation of a metal-containing chromophore, (iii) real-time dynamics of metal-ligand bond breaking and characterisation of intermediate, reactive and trapping states. The rates of all these processes are expected to occur in a femtosecond-picosecond range, on the fastest possible chemical time scale. A wealth of fundamentally important knowledge about initial steps of excited state dynamics and photochemical reactions will be obtained. Ultrafast electron transfer and isomerisation are relevant to the field of molecular electronics since they provide means of converting, manipulating and storing optical information by chemical means. Bond breaking mechanisms have an impact on the development of new photocatalysts and photoinitiatiors.
