Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research aims to use surface science techniques to study the initial formation of carbon nanotubes prepared by chemical vapour deposition. A existing novel system linking a UHV Scanning Tunnelling Microscope to a laminar flow Chemical Vapour Deposition reactor will be used to investigate how the nanotubes grow from particulate transition metal catalysts such as Fe, Ni, Co and Mo deposited as small clusters onto planar substrates using size-selecting mass-spectroscopy.Additional characterisation techniques include transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy to enable a fuller characterisation of the form of the nanotubes so produced. The research is aimed at providing a means to enable the use of carbon nanotubes for applications in the area of nanotechnology such as field emitting displays and, in the longer term, to provide the building blocks for other nanostructrues and nanodevices. The research will also aid the development of carbon nanotubes based SPM tips. This proposal is a feasibility study to demonstrate the capability of the system to achieve the above aims.
