Summary on Grant Application Form |
Dynamic loading may affect both the loading and resistance sides of structural assessments for fracture and plastic collapse but there are no clearly defined procedures as to when and how to take account of this type of loading. Finite element analyses will be carried out to establish magnification of stresses and stress intensity factors for a range of typical structural applications including wave slam, earthquake, impact and blast loading. FE analyses will also be used in a modified local approach to establish rates of crack tip loading, local strain rates and crack tip constraint associated with the different types of loading. These will be compared with crack tip conditions for short cracks propagating into tough material. Tensile and fracture toughness tests will be carried out on selected high strength steels at different loading rates and temperatures. The results will be used to predict both dynamic fracture toughness and crack arrest toughness from tensile test data. The likely effects of weldments will be explored with a view to further work in this area at a later stage. Guidance will be developed for practising engineers on use of failure assessment diagram procedures for dynamic loading and short crack arrest cases.EngProg\
