Summary on Grant Application Form
The Platform Grant would be used over a four year period in order to expand research in pavement and rail-track engineering and develop real international collaborative work by the only major UK University group supporting an industry with a 3b turnover. A research strategy has been planned over a six year period within six themes defined in consultation with industry, through knowledge of the international scene and on the basis of EPSRC's strategic thinking. Some priority will be given to the programme of research on rail-track problems in support of this newly-privatised industry, partly by application of knowledge accumulated in highway pavement research. The other themes embrace materials, foundations, sustainability, maintenance and performance prediction. The planned portfolio will embrace fundamental theoretical and experimental studies along with more applied work. Close links with industry exist and will be expanded. The possibility of a new laboratory facility to be developed in conjunction with a blue-chip company will greatly enhance the planned initiatives. To achieve the objectives, postdoctoral expertise will be retained and expanded in support of the five academic staff.
