Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a programme of investigations of MBE-grown magnetic multilayers and thin films containing rare earth/transition metal layers. The combination of large magnetic anisotropies and magnetostrictions due to the rare earth ions and strong exchange interactions of the transition metal ions, offers much promise for applications such as sensors and actuators. A broad range of techniques including magnetometry, magnetotransport, magnetostriction, MOKE and BLS will be employed to investigate the magnetic properties of these systems grown by the Oxford LaMBE group. Computational modelling will be used to back up the experimental investigations.
