Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to provide a theoretical base for pattern detection in data mining. Model building, the large-scale summarisation of the data (either theory or data driven), is well developed and understood. In contrast, pattern detection, the discovery of small-scale regularities, peculiarities or other features of a data set, is less well developed. Work on pattern detection is currently taking place in several areas, but it is very ad hoc, with little underlying theoretical base or unity. Current work will be reviewed and a formal probabilistic basis to unify pattern detection algorithms will be developed.
