Quadrupolar nuclei account for three-quarters of NMR-accessible nucleides. Our aim is to develop new NMR techniques for the study of this increasingly important group of nuclei in both solids and liquids and to apply these to a number of significant problems in chemistry, materials science and biology.In solids, the recently developed multiple-quantum magic angle spinning (MQMAS) experiment allows high-resolution NMR spectra of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei, such as 17-O, 23-Na and 27-Al, to be obtained using conventional MAS hardware. This new technique is already used academic and industrial research to study minerals, glasses and zeolites. We aim to develop this experiment further by, for example, combining it with novel cross-polarisation methods to increase both sensitivity and information content. The detailed form of MQMAS lineshapes will be used to investigate the local structure of crystalline and amorphous solids, with particular reference to the proximity of other quadrupolar nuclei, such as 35-Cl and 81-Br. These new MQMAS methods will be applied to the study of minerals, treated aluminosilicates and metal- and water-binding proteins.In liquids, we will develop and refine multiple-quantum filtered 17-O and 23-Na NMR methodology for studying water and sodium in isotropic and anisotropic environments in biological systems.
