Summary on Grant Application Form |
Microcavities allow the control of spontaneous optical emission from sources embedded within them. They have been used as a test bed for experiments in fundamental quantum optics and are increasingly being employed to improve the efficiency and/or functionality of optoelectronic devices such as the Light Emitting Diode. It is now wideley recognised that planar microcavities offer rather limited control over emission. Systems with wavelength scale periodic microstructure are being activley explored as a way to increase this control. However, present theories of spontaneous emission in the presence of such microstructure have been demonstrated to be inadequate, they are incapable of dealing with the strength of periodic modulation that has been shown to be physically interesting and technologically important. We propose to develop a new theoretical framework to the problem, based on a rigourous diffractive optics approach. This, together with associated numerical modelling, will allow both a fuller understanding of the underlying physics and assessment of the efficiency and functionality of candidate device structures.
