Summary on Grant Application Form
Recycling wastepaper creates residual waste solids estimated at 200/a of more than 4 million tonnes processed annually. Traditional disposal is by landspread, landfill, or incineration followed by landfill. Phases 1 and 2 demonstrated that the waste could be used in construction applications. This. Phase 3 proposal focuses on the cement fibreboard application. The mechanical properties which range from satisfactory to outstanding depend on the form of sludge; fibre content, cement content and board density. Sludge forms available are post-flocculated (current production), pre-flocculated, and fibrerich (obtained by separation techniques).A major requirement in Phase. 3 is to improve the dimensional stability related to the ingress and egress of water vapour. Durability trials under natural exposure and accelerated conditions are to be carried out: Salford prototypes must satisfy rigorous specifications to trigger full-scale, industrial preproduction trials, .
