Summary on Grant Application Form |
We wish to build a new high flux VUV monochromator covering the range 40-200 nm at the Daresbury SRS. This will provide an internationally competitive instrument at modest cost which will stimulate new world-class science over a range of disciplines; physicists, chemists and biologists. The instrument will be built through collaboration between the University of Birmingham, CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory, and the manufacturers. A wide range of science is described, including the spectroscopy and decay dynamics of Rydberg and molecular ion states of polyatomic molecules, photoelectron and photoionisation phenomena, cluster and free radical studies, and circular dichroism studies of a range of condensed-phase, chemical and biological samples. The work will be of importance to applied areas in clean technology, mass spectrometry, atmospheric and interstellar science, and biological / radiation damage. The proposal receives enthusiastic support from ca. 12 major research groups from all the three main disciplines, and will serve a wide variety of scientists - the main criterion for a MPRE award.
